Hyakunin-Isshu is an anthology of 100 poems by 100 different poets. It was compiled by Master Fujiwara Teika who was a famous critic and poet from the twelfth through the thirteenth centuries.This poem is called Waka or Tanka . A Waka has 31 syllables , arranged as 5,7,5,7,7.

Hyakunin Isshu (one hundred waka poems by one hundred poets) is a poetry anthology containing one hundred waka (classical Japanese poems), one each by distinguished poets from ancient times; in the past, it had been called 'Hyakunin-shu.' Ogura Hyakunin-isshu is a collection of outstanding poems composed by 100 poets during the 7th to 13th centuries, with one poem selected from each poet. The gender, social status and occupation of the poets varied; they included emperors, nobles, women, and Buddhist monks.
